Don has been a member of the
Pedal Steel Guitar Association out of
In 2003 he received the prestigious "2003 Appreciation Award" from the Pedal Steel Guitar Association for his many years of contributions to furthering the Pedal Steel Guitar and its teachings.
He started playing guitar in 1958 and played the R&R of that era with many 4 piece bands and moved on thru the Folk music in the 60's, then to the Country Rock of the Eagles ,the Marshal Tucker Band and to Willie, Waylon and Merle Haggard.
In the 70's into the mid 1980's he worked the wedding, banquet, party and lounge circuit in the Boston area with the "Smoke Shoulder Band" , the "Open Road Band" and as the "Fireside Duo."
In recent years in Florida he has played Guitar, Dobro, Pedal
Steel, Bass and Mandolin and vocals in the “Country Travelers
Band” in which
He was the Steel Guitar player for the "Back Porch Band" and "Country Sunshine Band" covering Classis Country Music, where he doubled on Guitar and Vocals.
He recently was the lead guitar & steel player in the popular "Sagebrush Band."
He was the staff Pedal Steel Guitar player & on occasion played Lead Guitar, Dobro or Mandolin on Saturday afternoons at the ”Cowboy Junction Opry” in Lecanto, FL for 6 years until it closed its doors.
On occasion, he also sat in with the local Jazz Society Bands and played Pedal Steel or bass with them. He also played several gigs with a local Hawaiian Band.
His main influences in steel are Lloyd Green, Buddy Emmons, Rusty Young, Ralph Mooney, Herb Remington, Paul Franklin, Joe Wright, Herby Wallace, John Hughey and of course, Jeff Newman and his many seminars which he attended in the 80's & 90's.
He is also a BMI Songwriter and has written over 350 songs since his first song back in 1958 and has recorded several CDs to date which are available from him thru this web site.
He now has several instructional Tab Manuals for sale and has several students on Steel and Guitar which keeps him busy when he is not playing with the band and the FSGC monthly Jams.
His four CDs "Bummin' Around" ,"Takin' Life Easy", "Shenandoah" and " Favorite Requests" are presently featured on Mike Gross' Swingin' West Radio Show, KSEY out of Seymour, Texas and pod-cast on his web site www.swinginwest.com , and ZuidWest FM, Netherlands and the worldwide web and Internet radio stations in Europe.
In July of 2002 Jack Stoner, Blake Hawkins and Don formed “The Florida Steel Guitar Club” which was designed mainly for the meeting and playing of the Pedal Steel Guitar and enthusiasts of the Steel Guitar in all its forms. On April 11, 2013 Don took over as President of The Florida Steel Guitar Club, which is now defunct.
Don has played the Haywood Henson show with some of his Nashville idols such as Joe Wright and Herby Wallace as well as many 1/2 hour spots for the Florida Steel Guitar Club Shows.
Don is now doing some studio recording work for artists on his Pedal Steel Guitar in the central Florida area.
